Youth Reference Group members

As a youth-led organisation, the perspectives and experiences of young people are integral in shaping everything we do. By listening – and learning – from young people we can show up in ways that are meaningful to them, so we can help them become the best version of themselves.

What is the role of the Youth Reference Group (YRG)?

Our Youth Reference Groups are made up of passionate young people (aged 16 to 25) who want to help make a difference and support others going through tough times, or who may not be feeling their best.

The voices of our Youth Reference Group members help us understand the issues young people care about, and things impacting their communities. By sharing their opinions, perspectives and experiences, they play a key role in shaping our programs, service delivery, policies and partnerships, ensuring we are meeting the needs of young people.

They have the opportunity to get involved in a number of ways, including;

  • Community engagement opportunities
  • Helping to shape and inform our services
  • Advocacy of youth mental health
  • Community events and projects
  • Collaborating with other local community organisations
  • Support the development of policies, procedures and initiatives

We have Youth Reference Groups at several locations across WA, including Albany, Geraldton, Perth, Midland and in Northam.

What it means to be a YRG member

As a member of our Youth Reference Groups (YRG) young people will be expected to join a meeting on site or online each month to discuss upcoming projects, provide feedback, to engage in activities or consultation, and to join with other like-minded young people.

The meeting frequency and date may change from location-to-location. Upon joining, young people will be appointed as a member for 18 months, with an option to extend for a further 12 months.

Our YRG members will also have great opportunities for personal and professional development, to gain experience in public speaking, and valuable skills in leadership and advocacy. Training and education may be provided to members as needed in areas including, communication, project management, media engagement and mental health.

“Being on the YRG has helped me find my voice. When I started on the YRG, I was on my gap year from high school, and didn’t know what I wanted to do. Now I know that working in the community sector is the path forward for me.”
