Chaise approached the headspace Midland Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Team seeking support and advice on how to transition his career from warehousing and transport into animal care – a longterm passion of his. After working together to explore opportunities, potential pathways and overcome a number of barriers, we are proud to share that Chaise has secured work caring for reptiles and presenting at expos, schools, and community events across Perth, where he has the opportunity to share his passion and extensive knowledge with the community.
When Chaise first connected with the IPS Team, he had been steadily building his career in warehousing and transportation for over 10 years. While the work provided financial stability, valuable experience, and strong connections, he made the brave call to pursue his passion. Since he was a kid, Chaise has loved wildlife, always learning and developing his knowledge, caring for reptiles, and building his own enclosures at home.
Chaise had experience working in the area through his longterm volunteering at a local reptile park, but securing paid employment in the animal care sector proved challenging. Despite completing countless applications for entry-level roles in sanctuaries and zoos, opportunities remained out of reach. After exploring the industry together, Chaise and his IPS specialist identified that many employers in the industry require formal qualifications, which were only available to study full-time, which was not feasible for Chaise at this stage of his life.
As barriers continued, Chaise considered working FIFO for a year to save money for future study. The team continued to explore alternative pathways, engaging with potential employers to explore opportunities. During this time, Chaise continued to grow his skills, completing his snake-handling certificate, expanding his Youtube channel, and continuing to develop his animal photography business.
Then, at just the right moment, Chaise and his IPS Specialist connected with an employer specialising in the care and presentation of birds and reptiles. This time, Chaise’s personal experience, volunteering background, and dedication paid off. Now, Chaise works in the industry he is passionate about, caring for repitiles and travelling across Perth presenting at expos, schools, and community events, sharing his knowledge of the animal world.
Congratulations to Chaise and the IPS Midland team!
You’re persistence has paid off, and we are so glad to see Chaise thriving in the animal care world.
