Our Geraldton team celebrated this year’s headspace Day with the official opening of the Geraldton Therapy Garden, a major and exciting milestone in the refurbishment of the Geraldton Youth Mental Health Hub. Located in the heart of Geraldton, the garden will be accessible to young people and organisations that support them, offering a nature-based outdoor space which creates opportunities to connect.

The space includes an undercover grassy area, fire pit and yarning space, perfect for an outdoor therapy program, counselling or group session or simply an event to bring people together. It’s a space where young people can engage in different activities, from art therapy to sporting activities. It offers a calm space to do nothing, escape the busyness of everyday life and an alternative location for a counselling session.
“We know that green space is a good therapeutic option for people who don’t want to sit in a counselling room, and the yarning space and firepit create a beautiful area for connection and encourages the community to come together,” shared Beckie, Geraldton’s Administration Officer.
“It is ultimately a place to meet young people where they’re at, meet the community where they’re at, and enhance their opportunities to access services in the region in a space that feels welcoming and calm.”
Celebrating the opening on headspace day, with the theme of ‘do nothing’, felt very fitting to the team. The theme encouraged young people to take time to rest and relax, something the Therapy Garden is designed to encourage and support.
The Geraldton Therapy Garden would not have been possible without the support of local partners, including the Midwest Development Commission, Bendigo Community Bank, Midwest Port Authority, the City of Greater Geraldton, Vestas Midwest Windfarms, Illuka Lends a Hand program, and many other donations and contributions from local businesses and tradespeople. The community’s generosity reflects how impactful this space will be for young people and the organisations supporting them, and we look forward to seeing the community bring it to life.
