The headspace Midland team is excited to launch their pilot Multicultural Youth Space event in October, after over a year of working on bringing the idea to life.
The team first had the idea in early 2024, when staff observed during their work with young people a common thread: that young people from culturally diverse backgrounds lacked the opportunity to meet and connect with others in a similar situation. Many young people share the experience of moving to a new country and trying to work out where they belong, without opportunities to connect. The team identified the opportunity to create a space where these individuals could meet, connect and share their personal experiences.
Following early discussions, the team undertook a survey with young people in the community and worked closely with the Youth Reference Group to co-design what this space could look like. It was important for the team that the space reflected what young people wanted, and that it is a place where young people from diverse cultures can see themselves reflected, feel a sense of belonging, and know they are supported.
One of the key considerations was the importance of involving parents and carers in the event. For some families, there is an understandable hesitation about sending a young person into an unfamiliar space without knowing what to expect or who will be present. Parents and carers play a central role in decisions about how young people spend their time, which is why we are encouraging their attendance and look forward to connecting with the whole community. We are excited to offer a space where the whole community feels welcome, and hope that by opening the space to parents and carers we will help build trust, reduce barriers to participation, and reflect cultural values where family plays an important and respected role.
The pilot event will be on Thursday 10 October, during the school holidays. The focus will be on creating a community-based day, with the emphasis on engagement, connection and fun – with activities including games, music, movies and food.
A huge congratulations to the headspace Midland team and Youth Reference Group on identifying the opportunity for connection and bringing the idea to life. We look forward to sharing the success of the event later in October.
If you know a young person who would like to attend the event, encourage them to register at MYS Registration Form or contact [email protected] for more information.
