The new social media restrictions come into effect on 10 December, and there’s been a lot of discussion, advice and information in our feeds and in the media about what this will mean for young people.
For some young people, the changes will understandably bring up feelings of confusion, worry, or frustration. If you have a young person in your life who will be impacted by the social media restrictions, here some tips to help support them through this change, now and in the months ahead:
- Encourage conversation – Ask young people how they’re feeling about the upcoming changes. Listen without judgement and let them know it’s okay to feel unsure or frustrated.
- Remind them of the reason why – Understandably, young people might feel like this is punitive and unfair. Remind them of the positives and negatives of social media and the benefits of delaying it’s use.
- Stay informed together – Explore reliable resources, share updates from trustworthy sources and regularly update your young person when you receive new or interesting information. This can help reduce anxiety and build trust.
- Encourage alternative ways to connected – Help them explore and find other ways to stay in touch with their friends. Suggest alternative activities to fill their time.
- Reach out for support if needed – If you notice changes in mood, social engagement, or behaviour, encourage them to seek support to work through this change.
