Youth Focus is proud to have been selected as one of just two organisations across Australia to take part in Orygen’s innovative Virtual Reality for Vocational Recovery (VR4VR) trial.

VR4VR uses Virtual Reality (VR) technology to simulate real workplace scenarios, creating an opportunity for young people who are experiencing mental health challenges to practice and learn from scenarios, in a safe and supported environment.

Mental health challenges can be a huge barrier for young people securing employment, yet finding meaningful employment can be one of the most effective preventative factors in staying mentally well. Our Work and Study Support team is excited about the opportunity of using technology to support young people through scenarios they would otherwise be unable to guide them through.

During the 6-week trial, young people will work through three different scenarios, each focusing on potentially anxiety provoking situations that may be creating barriers to seeking, securing or maintaining employment. These scenarios are:

  • Approaching potential employers: from what to wear to what to say
  • Managing difficult situations: such as how to navigate a difficult customer
  • Reasonable adjustments: how to advocate for yourself in the workplace to ensure the best results for you and your employer.

As part of the trial, our Work and Study Specialists have completed and been trained in the use of VR. They are equipped to support the young person through the experience, then discuss any emotions that may have arisen. This creates a unique opportunity for young people to practice and learn but also workshop potential solutions to challenges and work through any emotions or difficulties that they may be experiencing. Overall, it is about increasing the confidence of the young person, so they feel comfortable facing these situations in the real world.

Thank you to Orygen, for developing the technology, and TAL Community Foundation for funding support.
