A supportive space where young people don’t feel like they’re doing it alone.
Seeing a Youth Counsellor for the first time might feel a bit daunting. For some, one-on-one support may not be the right fit, or they might want to see what ‘counselling’ is about in a safe and supportive environment, with others who share similar experiences. That’s why we offer various group programs throughout the year.

What are group programs?
Group programs give young people the opportunity to come together and connect with others who may be experiencing similar issues. Led by qualified and registered Youth Counsellors, and attended by a small group of young people, these sessions help young people explore and share their experiences, feelings and what is going on in their life.
Some group programs may be offered in addition to one-on-one therapy, and others may be attended as a one-off session.
A safe space to come together and be heard.
Whether it’s navigating life’s challenges, dealing with relationship problems (friends, family or romantic), or managing stress and anxiety, our group programs help young people develop new skills, and remind them that they’re not alone in their mental health journey.

What group programs are available?
We offer different group programs for young people throughout the year. The programs that are currently running are outlined below.
Wise Minds
Offered in community venues and schools around Perth, this six-week program helps empower young people to understand, express and cope with their emotions in a healthy way.
Our Youth Counsellors work with young people in the session to develop skills in mindfulness, managing emotions, handling tough situations and improving communication and relationships. We help young people recognise that no emotions are “good” or “bad”.
BEST Program
The Behaviour Exchange System Therapy (BEST) is suitable for parents, carers or families who want are concerned about a young persons’ mental health. Together, with a small group, we will help them understand more about adolescence, mental health, and how they can work together to help support the young people in their lives.
The program runs twice a week, across six consecutive weeks. Carers are asked to attend all eight sessions, with young people (together with any siblings aged 12 and older) being invited to participate in the final four sessions. Each session will last 90 minutes.
The program has a proven record in reducing harmful substance abuse, at-risk behaviour including conduct and criminal behaviour, and improved mental health.
Who can get involved and how?
Young people currently engaged in counselling services at Youth Focus are eligible to join our group programs. Our Youth Counsellors will recommend the program that best fits each young person’s needs and availability.
