Opening of Mitchell Street drop-in centre in Geraldton

Our headspace Geraldton team have partnered with the Geraldton Sporting Aboriginal Corporation (GSAC) to provide a counselling service from the Mitchell St Community Centre for local Spalding residents.

The new service, which was launched this week with a community open day, will provide youth friendly and culturally safe spaces to engage with young people and their families.  Counselling services will be offered initially one day a week, with the potential to increase number of days if needed.

For the young people in Spalding, it can be difficult for them to travel to headspace Geraldton, which is located some distance away with limited public transport opportunities. The Mitchell St Community Centre will make it easier for young people in the area to walk to the centre, and GSAC staff will also be available to assist with transport and referrals.  The centre has two counselling rooms, a large activity room and kitchen, as well as access to a newly re-developed park/playground with a full basketball court and lots of outdoor sitting spaces, including a yarning circle with a fire pit.

The open day was attended by young people in the area, their families, staff from GSAC, Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (GRAMS), and headspace Geraldton staff.   It was a relaxed day with opportunities to let the community know about headspace and how to access the services.  Our thanks go to GSAC for providing headspace Geraldton with access to the centre and all its resources.
